Empowering Outdoor Exploration.
The Challenge
A Disconnect in the Camping Market
The camping industry has experienced a significant boom in recent years, with a growing number of people seeking solace and adventure in the great outdoors. However, a disconnect exists between the increasing demand for outdoor gear and the current offerings in the market.
Existing platforms often present an overwhelming amount of generic information, making it difficult for campers to find gear tailored to their specific needs.
Experienced adventurers struggle to locate in-depth reviews and expert advice, while families find it challenging to navigate safety concerns and find age-appropriate gear. Furthermore, beginner campers often feel intimidated and lack the confidence to embark on their first outdoor adventure.
UX Research & Insights
To bridge this gap, I embarked on a journey of user research to understand the diverse needs of camping enthusiasts.
Through interviews and surveys, I gained valuable insights into their pain points, motivations, and desires.
This led me to create three distinct personas:
Experiecd Erica
Erica, 32, is a seasoned backpacker and outdoor enthusiast based in the Pacific Northwest.
She thrives on challenging hikes, summiting peaks, and exploring remote wilderness areas. Erica values high-performance gear, sustainability, and the freedom of solo adventures.
She's a meticulous planner who meticulously researches gear reviews and seeks expert advice before making a purchase. Erica is also passionate about sharing her experiences and inspiring others to connect with nature.
Family Fred
Fred, 38, is a devoted father of two young children living in the suburbs of Atlanta.
He loves spending quality time with his family in nature and sees camping as a way to create lasting memories and instill a love for the outdoors in his kids. Fred prioritizes safety, convenience, and fun when planning trips.
He appreciates kid-friendly gear recommendations and campsites with amenities that cater to families.
Curious Charlie
Charlie, 26, is a tech-savvy urbanite living in the heart of New York City.
He's always been fascinated by the outdoors but has never had the opportunity to experience it firsthand.
He's eager to embark on his first camping trip but feels overwhelmed by the amount of information and gear choices.
Charlie values community support, beginner-friendly guidance, and affordable options that will help him build confidence and enjoy his outdoor adventures.
Competitive Analysis
I conducted a competitive audit of existing camping retailers and platforms to understand their strengths and weaknesses.
While some excelled in providing a wide selection of gear, others lacked personalized recommendations or failed to foster a sense of community.
I identified an opportunity to create a platform that combines expertise, personalization, and community engagement to empower all campers, regardless of their experience level.
Synthesizing Insights and Defining the Opportunity
Through affinity mapping and careful analysis, we identified recurring themes and patterns in the user research and competitive audit.
These insights led us to define the core problem and opportunity for Basecamp.

Validation & Design Iterations
Design Process
I conducted usability testing on lo-fi wireframes, gathering valuable feedback from our target personas.
Key insights included:
• The importance of clear navigation and labeling.
• The need for a streamlined quiz experience.
• The desire for a strong community focus.
• The value of personalized recommendations and curated content.
We incorporated this feedback into subsequent iterations of the design, refining the user flow, optimizing the quiz, and enhancing the visual hierarchy and clarity of information.
User Feedback:
"Profile" feels out of place in the bottom nav. Perhaps that moves up to the top right? Seems like it's a different category of actions than "shop/social/resources".
User Feedback:
"Where do Favorites live once indicated?"
"Favorited items seem like a good opportunity to serve 'If you like that you might like this' recommendations."
"These collected (and shareable) gear / packing lists are great! In fact, I wonder if there is an opportunity to focus on 'Saved' content in a bigger way somewhere in the experience..."

Addressing User Feedback
Better User Profile Navigation

Users expect a clear distinction between primary navigation actions (Shop, Social, Resources) and personal account actions (Profile).
Change Implemented:
Moved the "Profile" icon to the top right corner, aligning it with common design patterns and user expectations.
Insights:
Users want a clear and centralized location to access their saved items.
Saved items present an opportunity for personalized recommendations and social sharing.
Users desire a broader focus on saved content beyond just gear lists.

Created a dedicated "Gear Locker" section within the user profile.
Allowed users to view and shop from shared lists, fostering a sense of community.
Introduced the concept of expanding the saved content experience to include trip itineraries, trail maps, reviews, and community posts in the future.
Future Plans:
Centralized "Saved" Section: Exploring a dedicated "Saved" section, accessible from the main navigation, to house all types of saved content in one convenient place.
Deeper Community Integration: Enabling users to easily share lists with the wider community, discover recommendations from experts and influencers, and foster even more collaboration and inspiration.
Advanced Personalization: Leveraging the data from the Gear Locker to create even more targeted product suggestions and curated content.
Benefits of the "Gear Locker" and Expanded Saved Content:
Enhanced Organization and Discoverability: A central hub for managing gear wishlists, trip plans, and saved guides, making it effortless for users to revisit and reference their preferences.

Social Connection: Viewing and shopping from shared lists fosters a sense of community and facilitates the discovery of new products and ideas.
Personalized Recommendations: The Gear Locker acts as a foundation for even more tailored product suggestions based on saved items and collaborative lists.
The Evolution of the "Gear Locker"
Initial user feedback highlighted a need for better organization and discoverability of saved items within the app. Users wanted a centralized space to manage their gear wishlists and access trip plans and inspirational content. They also expressed a desire for more collaborative features to share and discover gear recommendations with friends.
This feedback directly inspired the creation of the "Gear Locker." By providing a dedicated space for saved items, I improved organization and discoverability, making it easier for users to access and reference their preferred products and trip ideas.
Furthermore, user suggestions led to the development of collaborative features within the Gear Locker. Users can now create shared lists with friends, easily view and shop from each other's lists, fostering a sense of community and shared knowledge.

Basecamp's color palette was designed to be both versatile and systematic, ensuring consistency and clarity across the user interface. The vibrant primary blue establishes a strong brand presence, while the secondary and tertiary blues create subtle visual distinctions for different levels of information. The use of neutrals like gray and white prioritizes readability and accessibility, while black and red effectively signal error states.
